Rachel Ashkenazi lives and creates in Tel Aviv, Israel

Rachel's art presents the viewer with a magical world that invokes a feeling of longing to another world, to another era.

She has a lot in common with the local Israeli expressionism movement, with painters influenced by the harsh light and the typical bold colors which she expresses in free intense strokes and with bold splashes of color.

​

Reality serves as the starting point but while exiting it, she shatters the given pattern of landscape and/or that of the human body, transforming them to their conceptual image as perceived by her and not necessarily their realistic representation.

The spontaneous process involves breaking and reassembly whereby it seems it is the painting that is in charge of this uncontrolled process until it says: enough, as if any additional color or line, will distort the inner harmony that has been achieved.

The new world she creates bears no name nor title that will anchor it in her own subjective world. This intended lack of definition allows the viewer to project his own images upon the work of art, images reflecting his inner world and thus, allows him to create his own personal story through the dialogue he holds with the painting.
